SUMMARY:Night Sky Landscape Photography in Rocky Mountain National Park
DESCRIPTION:Capture the beauty of the night sky in stunning landscape photos with us!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants in this 3-day course will learn about image composition\, how to place subjects in the frame\, and how to tell a story with their images. Instructor Stan Honda will teach participants how to take a naturalistic approach to their photography and how to use foreground objects\, like trees or geological formations\, to enhance compositions with stars in the background. Participants will also learn proper exposure for night photos\, concentrating on producing single frames of the sky. Finally\, Stan will instruct participants on image processing to bring out the best in each photo. \nWho: Participants ages 16 and up. \nProgram level: Easy/Moderate – This program is appropriate for most people. The field sessions will take place at dusk and after dark. Expect to travel short distances off trail throughout the program and to be on your feet for several hours at a time. Participants should be comfortable navigating both maintained trails and unmaintained meadows or grassy areas in low light conditions. Transportation will be in a 15-passenger transit van that requires stepping up to enter and has limited interior space. \nThis program has both classroom sessions and field sessions. \nWhen: \n\nFriday\, September 11 from 1:00pm to 10:30pm\,\nSaturday\, September 12 from 1:00pm to 10:30pm\, AND\nSunday\, September 13 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm\n\nWhere: Meet at the Fall River Visitor Center\, 3450 Fall River Road\, Estes Park\, CO 80517. \nTransportation: There are two options for transportation into Rocky Mountain National Park for this course: Participants may ride with Rocky Mountain Conservancy staff in a Conservancy vehicle\, OR participants may choose to drive themselves. Because parking is limited at many locations within the park\, we encourage participants who wish to drive themselves to carpool with other participants as much as possible. At the start of the course\, we will take a few minutes to chat as a group to arrange transportation to the field sites for everyone. Rocky Mountain Conservancy will provide the driver of each vehicle with a “Fee Waiver Exemption Letter\,” allowing self-driving participants to enter the park without paying additional fees. Entry fees are included in your course registration fee. \nWhat to Bring: \n\n10 Essentials for Field Institute Courses.\nCamera and equipment\, including tripod – Digital cameras suitable for this course include DSLR and mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses. All should have ISO of 3200 or higher. Standard wide-angle zoom kit lenses are fine\, wide angle lenses are useful\, especially with wide/fast f-stops. Telephoto zoom (70-200mm or 70-300mm) may be useful for moonsets and animals. All cameras should function in the Manual (M) mode\, and participants should be able to manually change ISO\, shutter speed and aperture (f-stop). Several functions used for night sky photography are found in the camera’s menu. Be familiar with the general menu layout. Please bring your camera manual! A digital copy is fine.\nA sturdy tripod is required. It doesn’t have to be large\, just big enough to hold your camera and lens steady.\nA laptop computer is optional for image processing\nHeadlamp or flashlight with red light\nCamera bag or backpack – large enough to comfortably carry gear plus water\, food\, and extra layers\nElectronic shutter release\, remote release\nSpare camera batteries AND at least two extra memory cards\nWaist pack – optional but useful for carrying small items needed in the field.\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbout Your Instructor: Stan Honda has more than 30 years of photojournalism experience in New York City and southern California. He has been a National Park Service artist-in-residence in five national parks\, including Rocky Mountain and has presented talks and workshops at Rocky’s Night Sky Festival. Stan’s night sky landscapes have appeared on NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day\, CBS Morning News\, Sky and Telescope magazine and Yahoo News. \n\n\nRefund Policy: Cancellations made more than 30 days prior to the start of the course are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made fewer than 30 days in advance are not eligible for a refund. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur programs proceed rain or shine\, and participants should be prepared for inclement weather. However\, should we decide to cancel a program due to unsafe weather or emergency conditions\, we will notify participants by email and automatically issue full refunds. \nConservancy members get 10% off individual registration when you use the discount code in your membership email! \nNot a member of the Conservancy? Learn more and join here: Conservancy Membership \nIf you have questions about this course\, please contact the Field Institute by email at education@RMConservancy.org or by phone at 970-586-3262.

SUMMARY:NPLD Volunteer Event - Bridge Construction in the Kawuneeche Valley
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day helping to construct foot bridges over Bowen Creek on the Continental Divide Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park!\n\n\n\n\nIn honor of National Public Lands Day\, join us to help improve conditions on the Continental Divide Trail by building foot bridges over Bowen Creek. \nWe’re looking for volunteers to assist park staff in constructing three small foot bridges out of logs. Volunteers will help move timber\, peel bark from logs\, dig footing for the sills\, and finally move and secure each section of the bridge into place. There is currently no crossing for the creek\, which poses a challenge to hikers when the water in the creek is high. Your assistance will make a lasting impact on trail conditions in the park! \nDate and Time: September 26\, 2026\, 8:30am – 3:00pm \nAdvance registration is required. \nMeeting Location: Volunteers will meet at the plaza in front of the Kawuneeche Visitor Center\, 16018 US-34\, Grand Lake\, CO 80447. From the visitor center\, participants will caravan in cars to the work site about 4.6 miles away. \nParking is available at the visitor center; please carpool if possible. \nMinimum age: Participants must be at least 18 years old for this event. \nWhat to Expect and Physical Expectations: \nFrom the trailhead\, we will walk half a mile on a relatively flat trail. \nManual labor will include digging\, peeling logs\, carrying heavy materials on irregular ground\, and repetitive motions. This will be highly strenuous for some\, with the entire workday spent on-foot\, and potentially walking distances that can add up to several miles in forests and other front country locations. Bridge construction will utilize hand tools such as shovels\, pulaskis\, mattocks\, rock bars\, log tongs\, and draw knives. Participants should expect to be out for the duration of the project in variable weather conditions\, from hot temperatures in direct sunlight to cold and windy conditions. Events may be cancelled or shortened if weather conditions become a risk to human health and safety. Please be prepared with a daypack containing everything you will need for the day. \nWhat to Bring/Wear: \n\nLayers for rapidly changing weather\, including rain gear and sun protection (sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses)\,\nLong sleeve shirt and long pants\,\nSturdy closed-toed shoes/boots\,\nLunch and snacks\,\nAt least 2 liters of water per person\,\nWork gloves (if you prefer your own)\,\nSafety glasses (or sunglasses)\,\nA day pack to hold everything.\n\nNearest bathroom: Bathrooms may be inaccessible for most of the event period. Be prepared to answer nature’s call in nature. The nearest pit toilets are at nearby trailheads. \nReady to sign up?\n
