SUMMARY:Edible & Medicinal Plants of Rocky Mountain National Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about the edible and medicinal plants found in Rocky Mountain National Park!\n\n\n\nNot only are Rocky’s plants diverse and beautiful\, but many species were part of the grocery store and pharmacy of earlier peoples and are still used today. We will explore these edible and medicinal species with a focus on their identification\, current and historic usage as food and medicine\, preparation techniques\, ethical harvesting\, and conservation. We will also discuss some toxic species to avoid! \nParticipants will:\n– Acquire skills in identifying native and non-native edible and medicinal plants found in the southern Rocky Mountains\, as well as toxic species to avoid.\n– Learn about common\, traditional\, and historic uses of wild plants\, plant parts used\, and methods of preparation for food and medicine.\n– Understand the importance of plant conservation\, ethical harvesting\, and safe use of wild plants. \nWho: Participants ages 16 and up. \nProgram level: Moderate – These programs are most appropriate for those with some hiking experience. Expect to travel 1-2 miles over the course of the program and to be on your feet for several hours at a time. Participants should be comfortable navigating both maintained trails and unmaintained meadows or wooded areas. Transportation will be in a 15-passenger van with bench seats and a narrow aisle that requires stepping up to enter. Prior experience hiking or walking above 8\,000 feet is recommended. \nThis program is entirely field based. \nWhen: Tuesday\, July 7\, 2026 from 9:00am to 3:00pm \nWhere: Meet at the Estes Park Visitor Center and travel together to various locations within RMNP in Conservancy vehicles. All required fees and permits for park entry are included in your registration. \nWhat to Bring: \n\n10 Essentials for Field Institute Courses\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \nAbout Your Instructor: Leanne Benton is a former ranger-naturalist in Rocky Mountain National Park who has led wildflower and tundra ecology walks in the park for 35 years and has studied and photographed the park’s wildflowers for more than 40 years. \n\n\n\n\nRefund Policy: Cancellations made more than 30 days prior to the start of the course are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made fewer than 30 days in advance are not eligible for a refund. \nOur programs proceed rain or shine\, and participants should be prepared for inclement weather. SUMMARY:Volunteer to Protect Native Ecosystems on July 7
DESCRIPTION:Rocky Mountain National Park needs your help!\nJoin us this summer for a hands-on day\, removing invasive plant species to help restore the park’s native vegetation. \nInvasive plants are a persistent threat in RMNP\, crowding out native species and disrupting the wildlife that depends on them for food and habitat. The most effective tool we have against them? People willing to get their hands dirty! Your physical effort directly translates into healthier ecosystems and biodiversity that will help protect the park for generations to come. \nAlongside park staff\, you’ll learn to identify invasive species and master proper removal techniques\, skills you can carry with you long after the day ends. Expect a full\, active day outdoors on varied terrain\, but know that every plant pulled is a genuine\, measurable difference made for the landscape you’re helping protect. \nThis is demanding\, rewarding work\, and it matters. Be part of the effort to preserve the natural beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park. Sign up today! \nThere is no fee to participate in this volunteer work day. \nWhat to Expect:\nMinimum age: 18 years \nTime: 9:00am – 3:00pm. Volunteers should plan to stay for the full duration of this event. \nParking/meeting location: Please meet in the outdoor plaza in front of the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. Volunteers will be driven into the park via shuttle vans. \nWork site: Sites to be determined based on conditions. \nNearest bathroom: Bathrooms may be inaccessible for most of the event period. Be prepared to answer nature’s call in nature. \nWhat to bring: Layers for rapidly changing weather\, rain gear\, sun protection (sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses)\, long sleeve shirt and long pants\, sturdy close-toed shoes\, lunch and snacks\, at least 2 liters of water per person\, gloves (if you prefer your own)\, and a day pack to hold everything. \nPhysical expectations: Manual removal of invasive species is moderately strenuous\, with the entire workday spent on-foot\, and potentially walking distances that can add up to several miles in montane meadows\, forests\, and other front country locations. Plant removal will utilize hand tools such as shovels and pruners to dig out plants and remove seed heads. Participants should expect to be out for the entire time in variable weather conditions\, from hot temperatures in direct sunlight to cold and windy conditions. Events may be cancelled or shortened if weather conditions become a risk to human health and safety. Please be prepared with a day pack containing everything you will need for the day. \nReady to join us?\n\n\n \nQuestions? Please contact the park’s volunteer office at ROMO_volunteer@nps.gov or 970-586-1330.
